A lot can be said about the United States, for good and ill. But I like to set all of that aside on this day and think appreciate the fact that we fought for and gained our independence from Great Britain. Yes, of course, with help from France, but still. This was something that had never happened before in recorded history.

Never. Thousands of years of recorded human history, and no colony had ever broken away from its parent country before then.

Staggering to think about, and an amazing accomplishment.

I think it’s also a lesson. People love to call something impossible, just because it’s never been done before. But with sufficient determination – and a willingness to seek and accept assistance – anything is possible.

If that’s not a thought worth celebrating, I’m not sure what is.
