Acceptance
I was notified yesterday that my flash fiction story, “Bedfellow” has been accepted by KNOCK, a literary journal affiliated with Antioch University Seattle, for publication in their November issue, #15. I had gotten so used to seeing rejections that when I read the subject line of the e-mail, “KNOCK Acceptance”, I needed a moment to parse it. I could not quite grasp what I read.
Then elation set in, and I had a goofy grin on my face for at least half an hour. Not what one usually expects to see from someone stuck working late at work. Work didn’t matter though. Sure, I put in over three hours of overtime, but I didn’t notice them.
I didn’t do any work on my writing last night. I felt I deserved an evening off. Then, first thing this morning, I revised three prose poems, a flash fiction piece and a manuscript I’m working on for a picture book. After all, an acceptance is a step, not the goal.

For those of you who might be wondering about the state of my first acceptance, I’m a bit curious myself. I was assured a little while back that the next issue, containing my story “Shooting Free Throws”, should be published by about August. So here’s hoping.
